COMPETITION REGULATIONS
Purpose
Tractor Pulling is a non-competitive, fun event designed to test the pulling capacity of vintage and classic tractors. The safety of participants, spectators, and officials is paramount.
- Tractor Age: Only tractors manufactured in or before 1985 may participate.
- Vintage Class: 1955 or earlier
- Classic Class: 1956–1985
- All tractors must be at least 40 years old.
- Horsepower: Must not exceed 200 drawbar horsepower. Classes include:
- Under 15hp, 16–20hp, 21–25hp, 26–30hp, 31–35hp, 36–40hp, 41–45hp, 46–50hp, 51–55hp, 56–60hp.
- Licence: All drivers must hold a current state driver's licence.
- Underage Drivers: Aged 15–17 may participate only in fenced compounds under strict adult supervision.
- Briefing: All drivers must attend a mandatory safety briefing and sign the attendance sheet.
- Behaviour: No alcohol or drugs permitted. Breath testing may occur; any positive test will result in disqualification.
- Speed Limit: Maximum speed at all times is walking pace.
- Officials: All officials' directions must be followed. The judges' decision is final.
- Track Access: Only competitors and officials are allowed in the competition area during pulls.
- Seatbelt and Attire: Drivers must wear:
- A seatbelt if fitted
- Non-synthetic clothing from wrist to neck to ankle
- Fully enclosed leather footwear
- Crash Helmets: Drivers of tractors with open ROPS (Roll Over Protection Structure) must wear an AS1698-certified crash helmet.
- Seating: Drivers must remain correctly seated at all times during the pull.
- Passenger Policy: No passengers on tractors, sleds, or tracks. No passengers or spectators are allowed in the preparation area or on the pulling track.
Standard Form: All tractors must be unmodified and in standard form Type variations only allowed if:

Modern tyres required to replace obsolete sizes

Rim spacers only allowed to fit modern tyres safely
Drawbars:

Must be original manufacturer-supplied, in good condition

No modifications permitted

Under 25hp: 18” (457mm)

Weights:

Maximum 2 wheel weights per wheel, not exceeding:

2” (50mm) past tyre edge

Or 4” (100mm) depending on local event rules

Only cast or steel manufacturer wheel weights permitted

No other external equipment or weight attachments allowed

Tandem Tractors: Only allowed at NHMA events with certified engineered hitch. Chain-linked tandem pulls are prohibited.

Front Wheels: Must remain on the ground at all times. Any lifting will result in termination of the pull.
Neutral Check:
- Tractor must be stationary and in neutral with both hands raised before and after hook-up
Start and Stop:
- Pulls begin and end with a clear signal (flag or horn)
- A red flag or horn indicates immediate stop
Acknowledging Signals:
- Drivers must raise their right arm to acknowledge all official signals
Pull Timing:
- Pull must begin within 30 seconds of receiving the green flag
- No gear changing during the pull (including Power Shift)
Slack Take-up:
- Driver must take up slack in the chain under red flag, only begin pull once green flag is given and acknowledged
- Tractors will be assessed by an appointed Safety Officer or Safety Committee.
- Unsafe tractors or behaviour may result in exclusion from the event.
