Buddy Pick Up (Barrel Pick Up) Competition
This fast-paced novelty event sees one rider gallop past a barrel while their partner leaps on behind them. It’s all about timing, agility and horsemanship and usually ends in plenty of cheers and laughs from the crowd!
Competition Regulations
- This is a timed event involving a rider and a buddy.
- The rider must ride down the arena and pick up the buddy, who will be standing on a barrel. Both must be mounted on the horse when crossing the finish line.
- Each participant may only enter once in the event — either as the rider or the buddy, but not both. Both rider and buddy must wear helmets and complete a waiver form before competing.
- The barrel must be placed at least 10 metres from the fence at the far end of the arena (opposite the timer line).
- Riders may approach the barrel from either direction and are permitted to circle it as they wish.
- The start line (timer line) must be positioned at least 20 metres inside the arena.
- Timing begins when the horse’s nose crosses the start line and ends when the horse’s nose crosses the finish line.
- The buddy must be standing on the barrel before the run begins and must mount the horse unassisted. Any physical assistance or steadying from the rider during the mount will result in disqualification.
- Both the rider and buddy must remain mounted throughout the run and must both be on the horse at the finish line.
- If the buddy touches the ground at any point during the event, the team is disqualified and the buddy must exit the arena on foot.
- Rider and buddy may sit in any position on the horse as long as they remain mounted and do not touch the ground.
