Dapto Show

The Dapto Agricultural and Horticultural Society claims distinction as the first mainland Australian agricultural society with a continuous 100-year record. Formed on November 8, 1856, at a public meeting, the society elected David Williamson Irving as its first president. Its inaugural committee drew members not only from Dapto but also from surrounding districts including Albion Park, Shellharbour and Jamberoo. The first show was held at the Illawarra Hotel, Dapto, on January 28, 1857. Alongside displays of horses, cattle and produce, ploughing matches were a highlight, with prizes awarded for the best work with both horses and oxen.
