Show History
While farmers’ carnivals and produce displays were held from 1906, the Manilla Agricultural Society was not formed until 1930. The first show, staged in 1932 on the recreation ground, was highly successful. By the second show, yards, stalls and a pavilion had been erected, and progress was rapid. By 1956, exhibits, machinery and household devices were valued at more than £1 million. A turning point came in 1977 when, due to Queen Elizabeth II visiting Tamworth on a Friday, the show shifted to a Saturday–Sunday format. Its success ensured the change became permanent. The fertile Manilla district supported strong entries in horses, cattle and other livestock, while the agricultural section was notable for producing some of Australia’s finest honey.
