Moree Show

The first Moree Show was held in 1874 by the Gwydir River Pastoral and Agricultural Society on a site north of a village of just 100 people, marking the beginning of a tradition culminating in its Centenary Show. Founding president J.D. Macansh, a prominent pastoralist, was succeeded in 1875 by A.A. Adams, whose family remains in the district. Notable later leaders included Alf Jones, MBE (president 1921–54), and Gordon Kirkby, MBE (1958–69). The society moved to its present showground on the town’s eastern edge in 1891 and adopted the name Moree P. & A. Society around the turn of the century.
