Show History
Early efforts began with ploughing matches in 1863, but a formal association emerged in July 1872 through John Gale and William O’Neill, aiming to encourage crops such as cotton and tobacco. Within three years, events expanded to include horses, cattle and produce. Under George Campbell of Duntroon, shows were held on local estates due to the lack of a showground. The association collapsed in 1881. A second body formed in 1883 secured 10 acres for a showground but held no shows. A third and lasting association was established in 1890, staging its first show on the new site. The society prospered in the early 20th century, particularly in horse events.
