Show History
The Tumbarumba and Upper Murray Pastoral, Agricultural and Horticultural Society staged its 92nd show in 1984, with the first held in 1892. Once a two-day event, it is now conducted over a single day. The show reflects the productivity of a rich district known for fat stock, dairying and wool. Located in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range, Tumbarumba also serves as a gateway to the Snowy Mountains Scheme and the Upper Murray tourist region. The name is thought to derive from an Aboriginal term meaning “sounding ground,” referring to hollow-sounding earth in places. The district also experienced a gold rush in the 1850s, attracting many Chinese miners.
