Show History
The first show of the Walgett Pastoral, Agricultural and Horticultural Association was held in July 1887, and colourful stories mark its early years. Gate rights were once sold, allowing operators to set admission prices. Local butcher Joe Easom became a legend by leaping his horse “The Gift” over the entrance fence in protest—before later paying his fee. Early shows drew visitors from across the region, arriving by four- and six-horse teams. In 1893, torrential rain forced exhibitors to return stock via the Barwon River aboard the steamer Brewarrina. Local feuding led to decline after 1914, and the show lapsed for 20 years. Revived in 1934, it drew crowds of about 2,000 each day and entered a new period of success.
